I’ve got a new version of Twitter Tools ready to test. This version has a number of changes, including one that has been very frequently requested:
Weekly digests is a rather complicated feature to build, and took a good chunk of time. Luckily, we had a development sponsor for this feature, who I will thank properly in the final release (once I receive permission to give them credit).

About 10 days back we announced that user voting has been opened up for the plugins in the WordPress Plugin Competition.
As of this post, the various plugins have received over 960 votes.
While this may seem to be a sizable number, it also means that many of our visitors have still not given their votes to their favorite plugins. Remember that there is a lot at stake in this competition and it would do justice for the plugin authors to receive your esteemed vote!

When redeveloping the site, we moved the WordPress instance from the web root:
/public_html/wp-config.php

/public_html/…
to a subdirectory within the web root:
/public_html/wordpress/wp-config.php
/public_html/wordpress/wp-includes/
/public_html/…
I consider this to be a best practice for WordPress powered sites, as it makes version upgrades a bit easier (among other things).1 Some plugins don’t work well with symlinked “plugins” directories, but those generally have easy fixes (use ABSPATH, not dirname() in your plugin).
These changes were made and thoroughly tested on our dev server with historical data. We then made the changes in a staging environment under a beta.example.com style domain name before pushing the changes live. In short, we were pretty careful and tested pretty well.
When we finally pushed everything live, the production server was brought to its knees. Yikes!
A little poking around, some bug reports, and very shortly thereafter we figured out the problem. We had failed to set up a rewrite rule to map content from:
/wp-content/uploads/
to:
/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/
where it was now located.
An omission like this wouldn’t have had much effect on server load in some site configurations, but one of the wonderful features of WordPress - its lovely permalinks - has a hidden caveat that can be exposed if someone makes a configuration mistake (like we did).
WordPress’s permalink system basically works like this:
It’s a really elegant system and works very well. However, it also means that 404 requests - http requests that result in a “file not found” message - have a much higher impact on the server than a traditional 404 request does. For every 404, the server instantiates WordPress, does some database work to try to see if it can figure out what to serve, etc.
When we didn’t set up proper redirects for the content in “uploads”, we basically increased the server load by a factor of 20. Instead of a single request going to WordPress and 20 requests serving static content by Apache, all 21 requests were being sent to WordPress.
The increased load on the server had some… adverse effects on performance. Yeah.
So this should be a pretty easy thing to catch, right? If the URLs to the images are broken, we’d all be seeing a bunch of broken images all over the place in our testing - right?
Not exactly, and for two different reasons:
Once we tested in browsers that didn’t have the images cached, we immediately saw the problem.
Luckily, this is a really easy problem to fix. A simple mod_rewrite rule (placed before the standard WordPress rewrite block) fixed everything right up:
RewriteRule ^wp-content/uploads/(.*)$ /wordpress/wp-content/uploads/$1 [L,R=301](alternate code, improvements to syntax welcome)
With this in place, the old URLs were redirected to the new location and no longer were spinning up WordPress on every image request.

His post covers a number of different situations you should think about ahead of time before you step into your favorite code editor. According to Thord, there are three things you need to consider before committing to WordPress:
1. Is the functionality needed covered by the WordPress core functions, and/or with the addition of (not too many) plugins? This is usually managing information pages (using Pages), and publishing news/press releases (using Posts). If I need to add a lot of custom stuff, including the custom fields, then perhaps it gets too complicated for the client.
2. Is there a good translation of WordPress available, so that your client can get the backend in their own language? Why should my Swedish customers not have their CMS in Swedish? There is no reason, of course, and it is easy enough to install a language pack.
3. Will my client be able to upgrade WordPress themselves, or do I need to make plans for this as well? This is true for most platforms out there, but nevertheless you’ll need to have an upgrade strategy.
I’ve never dived into the realm of setting up WordPress for a client so this is all new to me. However, I know a lot of you install and configure WordPress for your own clients. 2. Is there a good translation of WordPress available, so that your client can get the backend in their own language? Why should my Swedish customers not have their CMS in Swedish? There is no reason, of course, and it is easy enough to install a language pack.
3. Will my client be able to upgrade WordPress themselves, or do I need to make plans for this as well? This is true for most platforms out there, but nevertheless you’ll need to have an upgrade strategy.
I’ve never dived into the realm of setting up WordPress for a client so this is all new to me. However, I know a lot of you install and configure WordPress for your own clients. Earlier this week my Automattic colleagues and Effigent released WordPress for iPhone and iPod Touch. Now, the source is also available and Trac is set up for reporting bugs and participating in development!
I’ve tried it on my iPod Touch. They’ve done a great job! And are urgently working on fixing the worse bugs.
It’s already in the top 50 free apps.
Development has been managed by Raanan Bar-Cohen and the app is designed by Matt Thomas.
WordPress for iPhone has the clean Matt aesthetic, though I expect the iPhone SDK probably doesn’t allow much deviation from clean simplicity.
There is quite some stink up about whether or not we are breaking Apple’s iPhone development NDA by our application being open source, and speculation that Apple will sue us.
I was curious about the “Open Source” proclamation at the top of its non-App-Store webpage.
WordPress for iPhone is in the App Store. WordPress for iPhone’s Application Description has always stated it’s open source. Someone at Apple approved “WordPress for iPhone Open Source”.
Although it makes for a great story and gives us freetards reason to bang our chests, my thought is Apple has it’s anti-open source clause in the agreement to cover their butts from their code being “poisoned” by a viral license. Butt covered, let the open source applications flow, but no squirting.

It should be a fun release both for the features we have planned and also because it might incorporate some of the aspects of Crazyhorse, our experimental bizarro world dev branch which we’re laser-eye-testing in NYC next week. (700 blogs are running 2.7 already.)
